Asbestos Types
Asbestos is classified into either Friable or Non-Friable categories. Friability is the tendency of asbestos containing materials (ACM) to break down into a dust or powder form when damaged, crumbled or touched.
Friable Asbestos – Friable Asbestos is more susceptible to damage and can be easily broken releasing asbestos fibers into the air when damaged. Some examples of Friable Asbestos can be: insulation, spray coatings, plaster, drywall or joint compound.
Non-Friable Asbestos – Non-Friable Asbestos is more resistant to damage and when damaged it is less likely to release asbestos fibers into the air. Some examples of Non-Friable Asbestos Containing Materials can be: floor tiles, textured decorate coatings, cement boards.
